DNA

What is DNA

Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is a nucleic acid that contains the genetic instructions for the development and function of living things. All known cellular life and some viruses contain DNA. The main role of DNA in the cell is the long-term storage of information.  In fact, we could record every single bit of data the world has ever produced, store it within DNA and it would only take up a small room.  It also can last hundreds of thousands of years, think Jurassic Park and the DNA that is frozen in time within the amber.  This information is the coding that ultimately dictates how you and other living things develop, grow, and function.  This is the goal of our company, to understand the specific parts of our DNA that code for the all things health and beauty.  With this knowledge everything you do, eat, drink, and how you go about your life can be done with a focus to maximize this code so you can live a longer, healthier, and happier life.  Nobody else in the world will have DNA the same as you, unless you have an identical twin.  This is what makes you genetically beautiful!

What are SNPs

Single nucleotide polymorphisms, frequently called SNPs (pronounced “snips”), are the most common type of genetic variation among people. Each SNP represents a difference in a single DNA building block, called a nucleotide. For example, a SNP may replace the nucleotide cytosine (C) with the nucleotide thymine (T) in a certain stretch of DNA.  In most cases these differences don’t instruct our bodies to do anything different than what is considered normal but in some cases these variations can have life changing effects. Cystic Fibrosis and Sickle Cell Anemia are two examples where a single gene has a variant which causes the instructions to do things that are ultimately harmful.  On the flip side, when these random mutations happened that induced changes that gave our species an advantage to survive and thrive, these variants were typically the ones to be passed on from one generation to the next.  This is the basis of human evolution.  For Genetic Beauty, we look at these differences within well known genes to see how YOU may react differently than what is considered normal.  This is the backbone of our DNA report, we look at over 100 SNPS such as one that has to do with collagen breakdown.  We all “normally” break down collagen as we age but some people have a variant that makes this instruction obsolete where the collagen breakdown is a much slower process.  Pretty cool huh? By knowing this information and over 100 other data points we can help you get on the right path to maximize your beauty potential.

What is a Genotype

Your genotype is your complete heritable genetic identity; it is your unique genome that would be revealed by personal genome sequencing. However, the word genotype can also refer just to a particular gene or set of genes carried by an individual. For example, if you carry a mutation that is linked to diabetes, you may refer to your genotype just with respect to this mutation without consideration of all the other gene variants that your may carry.

What is a Phenotype?

Your phenotype is a description of your actual physical characteristics. This includes straightforward visible characteristics like your height and eye color, but also your overall health, your disease history, and even your behavior and general disposition. Do you gain weight easily? Are you anxious or calm? Do you like cats? These are all ways in which you present yourself to the world, and as such are considered phenotypes. However, not all phenotypes are a direct result of your genotype; chances are that your personal disposition to cats is the result of your life’s experience with pets rather than a mutation in a hypothetical cat fancier gene.

Most phenotypes are influenced by both your genotype and by the unique circumstances in which you have lived your life, including everything that has ever happened to you. We often refer to these two inputs as “nature,” the unique genome you carry, and “nurture,” the environment in which you have lived your life.

DNA TESTING

Do you sell my data?

We do not sell or distribute any of your private information, including your DNA profile. We only use your testing information in order to provide you the services you have requested, process your order, and respond to any order or billing related questions. We FULLY understand that not all companies do this, some of the bigger testing companies make money selling your genetic information. At Genetic Beauty we ONLY test for the SNPs that are pertanant to the reports that we provide our customers. This amounts to less than one thousand SNPs; in comparison the bigger named companies test for close to one million SNPs. We have spent additional money to custom build our testing arrays with Rutgers University to collect this limited data and nothing more.

What if my report shows a risk for a subcategory that I don’t think is right or that I don’t see any evidence for?

Your genetics don’t lie; however, depending on what genes are expressed and in turn the proteins those genes are told to produce is another matter. That is called DNA methylation or epigenetics. Your age, environment, diet and other factors will turn certain genes on or off and if you aren’t experiencing any signs of a risk category that your genes say you are at a higher risk for that typically means those genes aren’t turned on. You need to be aware that you are at a higher risk for those genes to be triggered and start expressing those results. This can come with a change in environment, age, stress, or changes in diet. That’s why it is highly recommended to do those things that we suggest to keep your skin and body at an optimal level so those unwanted traits aren't expressed later on.

What lab do you use for the DNA test?

We use Rutgers University Labs for all DNA tests.

When do I get my results?

Your results will be emailed to you within 4-6 weeks from the date they are received at the lab.

How do you collect the DNA?

We use a saliva collection kit that you can use in the privacy of your own home. Then, you simply drop the sample in the provided envelope and drop in the mail.

Can I purchase a kit if I'm under 18?

If you are under 18, a parent or guardian can purchase a test kit for you. Each test kit must have their own customer account within the Genetic Beauty system.
